Steamship Sir Walter Scott
Loch Katrine is a landmark Scottish destination with a rich cultural and natural heritage. Home to the iconic Steamship Sir Walter Scott, which has sailed the loch since 1900, it lies at the heart of the Great Trossachs Forest and is regarded as the ‘Birthplace of Scottish tourism’.
Since 2018, I’ve worked with the Steamship Trust (a charitable trust that protects the historic Steamer for the public to enjoy) to deliver comprehensive destination marketing support. This includes PR, photography, video, event promotion, exhibition development, visitor materials, website design and maintenance, and successful grant funding applications.
I built and continue to manage the Loch Katrine website, keeping it up to date with news, content, and visuals that drive bookings and engage new audiences. My work has secured national press, magazine features, television coverage, and a BBC Radio 2 interview, significantly raising the destination’s profile.
When the Steamship was taken out of service just before her 120th anniversary after hairline cracks were discovered in her boilers, I worked on the Save Our Steamship (S.O.S.) campaign—building a dedicated appeal website, delivering national PR, to support the successful £850,000 fundraising effort. I also wrote and submitted grant applications, including one that secured £130,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland.
To mark the Steamship’s return in 2023, I helped develop a multimedia exhibition at Trossachs Pier, featuring video, audio dramatisations, heritage displays, and a braille model for visitors with visual impairments.
Other highlights of our work together include a large image and video bank used across print and digital platforms, a multi-language destination mini-guide, and PR support for new attractions like the Rhoderick Dhu Viewpoint and Scenic Tower—located at the very spot that inspired Sir Walter Scott to write The Lady of the Lake, the publication that first put Loch Katrine on the map.
Whether you’re looking for one-off help or long-term destination marketing support like I provide to the team at Steamship Sir Walter Scott, I’d love to hear from you.
