Lantra Scotland
Working with Lantra Scotland for over a decade has been a rewarding and eye-opening experience. Over that time, I’ve helped produce a wide series of short films filmed across Scotland, focused on people who have chosen careers in land-based and rural industries.
These films showcase a wide range of roles, including agriculture, aquaculture, horticulture, equine care, engineering and other specialist land-based professions. The aim is simple but powerful: to give people a genuine insight into what these jobs involve, why they matter, and what working in these industries is really like.
Each film follows an individual in their role, capturing them in action and telling their personal story. Viewers hear how they got started, what they enjoy most about their work, the challenges they face, and what advice they would give to others considering a similar career. The result is a series of honest, relatable films that put real jobs and real people front and centre.
I’ve worked closely with Jim Ewing of Lantra Scotland on this series. Jim conducts the interviews and brings a natural warmth and curiosity to each conversation, helping contributors feel at ease and encouraging thoughtful, authentic storytelling. That approach has been key to the films' success.
What stands out most across the series is the sense of purpose shared by everyone featured. There is a strong connection to nature, place and community, alongside a clear understanding of how their work contributes to everyday life in Scotland. Whether filmed on farms, estates, coastal locations or specialist facilities, each story highlights the importance of these careers to the country’s economy, environment and future.
This long-running project has resulted in a valuable library of video content that Lantra Scotland continues to use for careers promotion, education and outreach. It’s been a privilege to help tell these stories and support a programme that encourages people to explore meaningful, skilled careers in rural Scotland.
