The Great Trossachs Forest
The Great Trossachs Forest is one of the UK’s most ambitious woodland restoration projects, located in the heart of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Stretching from Inversnaid to Loch Katrine and Glen Finglas, the project covers more than 160 square kilometres. It focuses on restoring native woodland, enhancing biodiversity, and creating a resilient landscape for both wildlife and people.
The project is managed by a partnership comprising Forestry and Land Scotland, RSPB Scotland, Woodland Trust Scotland, and other conservation organisations. The landscape supports iconic species such as red squirrels, ospreys and black grouse, while also offering opportunities for people to experience nature responsibly.
Website design to support conservation and visitor management
I was commissioned to design and build a new website for The Great Trossachs Forest to help communicate the scale, ambition and purpose of this landmark conservation projec
The primary aim of the website was twofold:
• to explain the long-term vision for woodland restoration and biodiversity
• to support responsible visitor access and good visitor management
The site acts as both an educational and practical resource, clearly explaining why restoration is needed, how the work is being carried out, and the collaborative role of the project partners.
Clear storytelling and practical information
A key focus of the website was making complex conservation work easy to understand for a wide audience. The content explains how native habitats are being restored, how climate resilience is being built into the landscape, and how people can engage positively with the forest.
Alongside this, the website plays an essential role in visitor management. It provides:
• clear maps and trail information
• guidance on responsible access
• wildlife awareness and seasonal advice
• practical information to help people explore the area safely and sustainably
This balance helps encourage public engagement while protecting sensitive habitats and species.
A digital platform built for long-term use
The website was designed to be easy to update and manage, allowing the project team to share news, updates and future developments as the forest continues to evolve over many decades.
It was a pleasure to work on a project of such national importance and to develop content focused on one of Scotland’s most special and ecologically significant landscapes.
