Loch Katrine — destination marketing and PR for a national heritage icon

Loch Katrine is one of Scotland’s most significant visitor destinations — home to the Steamship Sir Walter Scott, which has sailed on the loch since 1900, and widely recognised as the birthplace of Scottish tourism.

I’ve worked with the Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust and the Loch Katrine team for many years as their trusted marketing and PR partner, supporting everything from day-to-day promotion to major national campaigns.

Save Our Steamship — £750,000 raised

I worked on the ‘Save Our Steamship’ appeal — a major public fundraising campaign to secure the restoration of the Steamship Sir Walter Scott. This achieved:

• £750,000 secured for the vessel’s full restoration

• £130,000 grant award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund

• National and international media coverage across television, radio, print and online

The campaign worked because it tapped into the huge public affection for the Steamship and built a compelling case for keeping her sailing. At the heart of that case was accessibility — the Steamship’s ability to bring Loch Katrine’s extraordinary landscape within reach of everyone — and that became one of the most powerful and positive outcomes of the appeal.

Ongoing PR and national profile

Beyond the fundraising campaign, the ongoing PR work has kept Loch Katrine consistently visible in national media — supporting visitor numbers, seasonal campaigns and major milestones including the Steamship’s 125th anniversary in 2025.

Coverage has spanned television, radio, print and digital — positioning Loch Katrine not just as a local attraction but as a genuine national destination.

Marketing, content and visitor experience

Alongside the PR work, the partnership has covered destination marketing, website development, photography, video, and on-site heritage interpretation — including a permanent Steamship exhibition at Trossachs Pier, combining panels, archive material, film, and audio.

More recently, the work has extended to interpretation for a scenic tower at the ‘Birthplace of Scottish Tourism’ and a new Rainforest Nature Trail.

An ongoing partnership

Working alongside the talented and dedicated team at Loch Katrine has been one of the most rewarding partnerships of my career. Few Scottish destinations combine heritage, landscape and visitor experience at this level — and being trusted to help tell that story across so many different projects over so many years is something I’m genuinely proud of.

If any of this resonates — whether you’re managing a visitor attraction, running a heritage project, or simply looking for a trusted partner who takes your story as seriously as you do, we should talk.
